The 30 Top Travel Blogs in India in 2013

Being in the travel blogging business, I wanted to know how many travel blogs are thriving currently, who they were, how they host it, when they started blogging, how much they blog etc. So sat down today and by googling, reading various blogs, forums and manually checking comments of fellow bloggers, I came up with this list of the 30 top travel blogs in India in 2013.

This is not exhaustive, certainly not scientific, nor have I declared any one a winner. The tables headings are sortable and so click on them to sort any way you like.

Some findings and inferences:

To Be A Top Blogger (based on top 5 bloggers as per Alexa ranking)

  • Use WordPress
  • Blog at least 5.26 times a week
  • Be a woman!

General Observations:

  • 60 percent of bloggers are women. Cmon guys!
  • 66 percent of bloggers use Blogger/Blogspot. Understandably so as wordpress.com doesn’t allow Adsense on their hosted account.
  • Blogs with high PR all started between 2003 and 2005 except one. Lesson – start early.
  • Only one blog below the important 100,000  Alexa (Global) ranking!
  • The city with the highest number of bloggers? Bangalore of course!

Notes:

  • The posts per week data was taken with the help of Google Reader, so I can’t vouch for the correctness.
  • Due to some issue on the timestamp for some of the feeds, the post per week data could not be calculated and hence I have put a negative value (-1)  for easy sorting.
  • Some of the blogs do not have a country specific Alexa ranking and hence I had to put it as 999999 for easy sorting.
  • I have excluded a lot of commercial travel blogs as I wanted this to be a purely a list of the independent personal bloggers.
  • I have included blogs which are written by Indians and about travel in India predominantly.
  • PR = Page Rank ( just something which Google conjured up. A high PR site doesnt necessarily mean the site is popular).
  • Alexa Ranking was noted on 21st Feb 2013. Note that Alexa takes into account only a minuscule percentage of the web junta.  Nonetheless, a good way to estimate the popularity of a site.
  • I did not put any page view stats as it is hard to get a proper estimate and I guess it would be too intrusive as well.
  • Most of the blogs using feedburner had subscribers count switched off, so it was useless to publish them.
  • Update: As one reader rightly pointed out – there are no blogs which are in Hindi. Would surely create a new post on Hindi travel blogs shortly.

Two important points at the end:

  1. I apologize to anyone who feels that I have linked or mentioned his/her post without due permission. Please feel free to contact me here if you want to remove your blog from this list.
  2. If anyone feels that his/her blog needs to be amongst this list or any data is wrong, contact me or just comment!

Ciao! And do what you do best – blog away!

where is the Hindi blog list?

    इसमें एक भी हिन्दी का ब्लॉग नहीं है क्या हिन्दी की अलग सूची है?

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

Sorry about that. I did not include blogs in Hindi. My mistake. I will do another one on Hindi blogs exclusively. Thanks for this important point.

  • Murukesh

“Lesson – start early.” Really, I hope I can time travel to do that :D :D

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

LOL. I just meant that if people wanted to start a blog, start right now and need not procrastinate!

  • http://www.shadowsgalore.com/ Puru

First of all, a thousand thanks for your kind gesture. I am truly surprised, humbled and grateful for finding a mention here and this means a lot :) Other than that, thanks a lot for introducing some Travel bloggers about whom I was not aware out of my ignorance. It gives a great opportunity to me to explore the world through them … Once again, I am grateful to you :)

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

Same here. That’s why I researched initially about Indian bloggers – to know how many were there and how much they blogged, etc. Happy blogging!

  • silent monk

Good compilation.. However , according to me, a few good travel
blogs have been left out. Of course, I don’t know your ranking criteria. I am
talking about TWAC, travel with a couple, Lemonicks, devil on wheels , musafir
hun yaaron. and a few more etc ….

Also one has to be careful using Alexa ranking
because a lot of people use blogging platform provided by third party (other
than word press or blogger or blogspot) which has a very high Alexa rank
and the same rank is reflected on individual blogs as well .

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

Thank you silent monk for your suggestions. I would definitely check out these blogs. I would suggest others to also chip in with their recommendations as well.

As for Alexa, I guess everyone knows that it can be easily be manipulated, but since this is probably the most common and easiest way to check a site’s popularity, I decided to mention the Alexa rankings. And obviously, data from compete or quantcast wont be available!

  • Indrani

Quite an effort by you! Thanks! :)

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

      You are most welcome Indrani!

  • Manish Kumar

Nice effort. It was pleasant to see lot of my friends in the list. As for the point about Hindi blogs I feel that they should be clubbed along in the same list. After all the travel bloggers are bound by same passion i.e. their quest for travel & not by the language. I think many Hindi blogger’s will also find their way in this list by virtue of their Alexa rank.

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

Thanks Manish for the suggestions. I will think about it (clubbing both together). But I believe a majority of blog readers would either read hindi blogs or english ones. Just my personal opinion and may not be the truth. What say?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=662442172 Manish Kumar

A person who is enthusiastic about travel will read good content in any language he/she is comfortable with. Travel sites like Ghumakkar have gone bilingual many years ago & that has helped Hindi/ English travel blogging community to know and appreciate each other efforts much more. After all the aim of displaying such ranking is three fold : 1. To encourage the bloggers who are doing good & 2. To give readers a collection of best links related to travel spaces in one place. 3 To make aware bloggers about their co writers. That’s why I have given that suggestion.

  • http://twitter.com/Breathedreamgo Mariellen Ward

It’s good to know about all these bloggers, and see some of my friends on the list!

ps I blog about India, I’m a woman, but I don’t live in India.

    • http://www.hoteldepot.in/ hoteldepot.in

Yes Mariellen, I had seen your blog. You are quite active in the blogosphere. But I just did not list yours as not all criterias were met! :) But I could start one more list of non Indians blogging on India. There are a lot! Thanks for stopping by!

      • http://twitter.com/Breathedreamgo Mariellen Ward

Thanks, I think it’s a good idea to do another list — or expand this one. There are a lot of “India lovers” who were not born Indian (but who perhaps wish they were :) — and we do a LOT to promote travel in India.

  • http://twitter.com/artisdiary Arti

Thank you very much for including my blog in this travel list. It’s a huge honor to see my name amongst quality bloggers whom I have looked up to right from the very beginning. One blog which I can suggest to be in this list is Team G Square – http://teamgsquare.blogspot.com.

You have done a great job in compiling this list, kudos to you! Much appreciated, thank you :)

      Thanks for the suggestions Arti!

You can complete all your work and shopping as a convenience store is also available in this project. A high-end clubhouse featured with almost every desired recreational amenity is also a part of Plots in Chandigarh.

  • Poorna

    Hi,

While I don’t believe in lists, i wanted let you know that the data captured in not correct and the list seems to be false. You have left many blogs from the list which are higher than the ones listed by you. Maureen has already mentioned about hers. Please also take a look at our blog which ranks higher than many in this list though we do not have a personal domain name.

For example our blog (http://journeys2remember.blogspot.com/) ranks higher at 3797491 in Alexa compared to PAYANA @ 19287541 and ALAYAM Kanden @ 24117125.

Please take a relook at your analysis.
